Earthen Design and Construction Consultancy

In the early years of our practice, we worked on site building rammed earth walls for various projects around the country. We gave talks, and ran many workshops, disseminating this knowledge. Nowadays, we are focused on high-end energy efficiency to have the greatest possible reduction in CO2 emissions with our projects. Hence, there is less focus on these unusual ecological building techniques.  We can of course still include these materials if they are an important focus for a project, and can act as specialist consultants in this area.

Clients employing us in our role as earthen construction consultants have included:

• Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), Powys, on the AtEIC Building project. We acted as specialist rammed earth consultants from the concept stage, throughout the design process, and then worked on site leading the team constructing the rammed earth walls. This was a highly successful project achieving an extremely high level of build quality, and client satisfaction.
• CAT, we  advised the architects, Pat Borer and David Lea on the designs for the WISE building under construction on the CAT site.
• Aykley Heads, Durham. We acted as rammed earth construction consultants to Rivergreen Developments / JDDK architects, advising on soil types, shuttering and construction methods. This involved working with the design team, the development company, Bath University, and specialist suppliers and includes training of the construction company operatives in the rammed earth technique. see   www.rivergreen.co.uk/rivergreen.htm.
